Phil's BBQ and Linux Caffe

I was in the mood for a brisket sandwich so I headed to Phil's Original BBQ on college. There aren't too many real BBQ places in tha T-dot. It was busy with a midsummer College St. crowd, but I got my brisket sandwich pretty fast. The sandwich itself is smallish and it comes with a side (one of slaw/fries/potato salad). I got mine with a little cuplet of potato salad. $6.75. The style might be authentic American, but the portions are not. It was all very tasty and satisfying, but it won't be enough food if you're starvin'.

So so deal, but there's no real competition I know of in Toronto. It's not a super value, but I will probably splurge on a Phil's sandwich every now and then.

On the way home I stopped at the Linux Caffe. It's a small corner cafe with a slightly condescending hippie vibe. And I'm sure if you're not careful you'll be treated to a lecture about open source or some other nerdy obsession.

I paid 1.50 for a sorta small cup of coffee. It's a free hotspot and they have computers for $3.00/30 mins. They have free code if you give a shit abot that sort of thing.

Nova Era Bakery Pastry

The last week or so I've been a slave to every food craving I've had. Today I was jonesin' for some sweets, so I hit up the Nova Era bakery at Bloor and Dovercourt. It's one of the highlight of the Portuguese/Caribbean/African Bloor west strip (between Ossington and Dufferin).

I had a cannoli and a custard tart (very typical Portuguese thing), and two cups of coffee (total $6.43). The stuff is pretty tasty and not too sweet. There's an awesome selection of pastries, from donuts and tarts to cakes and flaky type things, and they're all in the $1.50 range. It would be pretty easy to put back three or four items -- no sweat.

The place also has sandwiches, for about $3.50, ($4 for proscuitto), which is a killer deal. There's actually seven Nova Era locations around Toronto, in pretty much every Portugese/Little Italy type 'hood (College/St. Clair/Dundas yadda).

Cafe Brasiliano

Today we hit up Cafe Brasiliano -- which as to be one of the BEST deals around (even though the price of a "plate" has gone up from $7 to $7.50).

For your $7.50* you get a piece of veal (dipped in sauce) and FIVE sides. Pictured: Salad, Mixed Vegetables, Rice, Pasta Salad and Mixed Bean Salad. This is more vegetable matter than most grad students eat in a month. And bread is free.

In addition to the usual mains they have a rotating choice of daily specials (eg. roast beef, fish fillet, baked chicken) and smaller choices as well and everything is of exceptional quality.

*Includes Taxes

Furama

Went to Furama on Spadina for post-dim sum dessert on Wed.

Not much to say other than the item on the right was labelled Pineapple Butter Cake but was really some kind of pork dumpling. Two people tasted it and were like "Eww, it's kinda salty". The cakes are okay, not that sweet.
