Simon's Sushi Island
We went for lunch at Simon Sushi on Spadina today (Now Review), enticed by the sign outside advertising $5.99 lunch specials. It's in the space that used to be occupied by Shanghai Lily - now THAT was a bad idea. When we walked in, it was pretty packed with only a few empty tables. We were presented with bowls of miso soup pretty soon after we sat down. I ended up getting a salmon teriyaki bento box which included California rolls, vegetable tempura, and salad (that's the empty compartment).
The salmon teriyaki had a nice crispy texture, but the sauce was a bit lacking in oomph. The tempura was pretty good but could have been less greasy, and the California rolls were just normal. Overall, not mindblowing but not a bad place to have lunch.
If you're looking to stuff your face, another decent Japanese restaurant is Sushi Island, on College just east of Clinton. They have a pretty large menu, and there are all-you-can-eat options which offer varying access to said menu. Be warned though, there's a $2 extra charge on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Last time I went, we focused on their appetizers. Here are some enoki-beef rolls, edamame, gomae-ae (spinach), avocado-seaweed salad, and tempura yam sticks (yam fries, basically). The yam fries were especially addictive.
Deep fried oyster (pretty yummy) and a rainbow roll:
They have a pretty long and interesting list of rolls. A memorable one had tempura tuna with peppers and other non-sushi vegetables. I've also enjoyed their kalbi (bbq short-rib) rolls and cream-cheese rolls in the past. They also have an interesting variety of rolls made with black glutinous rice and brown rice. I tend to think of black glutinous rice as a dessert (paired with a bit of coconut milk = tasty) but it was good in the rolls too.
Oh, and we ended up having a lot of dessert as well. They have some deep fried banana with ice cream which is pretty tasty, although I wish the pieces of banana were bigger.
