HK Day 6 (Cheung Chau)

Went to Cheung Chau (Long Island), an outlying island about 45 minutes by slow ferry from Hong Kong. Breakfast was at Cheung Kee (not written in English, if you're looking for it) just off the ferry pier. Had some rice noodles with fish cakes and a fried tofu. Apparently the place adds a lot of MSG -- in any case, pretty tasty.

After walking in a cave, we had an awesome lunch experience at New Ming Wah. This restaurant sits along the waterfront, somewhat near the ferry terminal. There's a main thoroughfare in front of the restaurant (other than some small motorized work tractors, no automobiles are allowed on Cheung Chau). They set up some tables across this thoroughfare, right up against the water. So we ate with the water as one backdrop, and the bustle of island life as another backdrop. Anyway, lunch was some watercress soup (sai yeung choy tong), curry beef brisket, some stir-fried crispy fish, and steamed fish (not shown). All of the dishes were pretty good, but the two fish dishes were particularly tasty and fresh.

After coming back to HK, we had dinner at Triple O's, a fast-food version of White Spot. White Spot is a venerable B.C. institution (the Chalet of the West Coast?) which hasn't made it farther East than Calgary, but has managed to set up shop in the Kong. We had two Mushroom burgers (not quite the same as the Monty Mushroom burger in B.C. - no cheese, and bigger slices of mushroom). I can't give an objective opinion about this food because I've grown up on it.

Sorry about the fuzz:

Finally, we went for dessert at Honeymoon Desserts, a sweets chain. Chinese desserts tend to be of the soupy rather than cakey variety, and tonight was no exception. First up was some black glutinous rice in warm almond soup. The glutinous rice is chewy and sticky, but sweet. It's a nice contrast to the mellow and smooth almond milk.

Second up was a cold dessert consisting of tapioca balls and pomelo flesh in a coconut-y soup. Very refreshing and a nice way to end the day.
